Las cintas Gravedad (Gravity) del mexicano Alfonso Cuarón yLa gran estafa americana (American Hustle), ambas con diez nominaciones, son la gran atracción en la disputa por mejor película del año y mejor director, al igual que 12 años de esclavitud (12 years a slave) que cuenta con nueve nominaciones.
Otra de las sorpresas es Capitán Phillips con seis nominaciones, aunque Tom Hanks no fue incluido en la terna a mejor actor, pese a que había sido perfilado como favorito por su interpretación.
Por otro lado, Sandra Bullock fue nominada a mejor actriz por su papel protagónico en Gravity, pero debe pelear el premio a Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Judi Dench (Philomena), Amy Adams (American Hustle) y Meryl Streep (August: Osage County).
La terna para mejor actor del año la lideran Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street) y Christian Bale (American Hustle), ambos se enfrentan a las interpretaciones de Bruce Dern (Nebraska), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 years a slave) y Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club).
La nominación de Jonah Hill como mejor actor de reparto fue otra novedad. Si bien su actuación en The Wolf Of Wall Street le dio el foto, la suerte no estaría con él debido a que contiende con el favorito Bradley Cooper y Jared Leto.
Jennifer Lawrence nominada por su trabajo en American Hustle compite con Julia Roberts, quien asombró en August: Osage County, como mejor actriz de reparto.
