El restaurador Julian Baumgartner se a vuelto viral en YouTube, gracias a el trabajo de revivir obras de arte sepultadas en años de deterioro  en su taller en Chicago.

As promised, here is the short clip of the varnishing of yesterday’s painting. While not an extreme change, you can see how the varnish intensifies the colors: the darks get darker and that makes the lights appear lighter, the depth comes back and the piece looks richer. In addition the painting is now protected from dirt, oils, and UV light. El artista plástico estudió en el Purchase College, de la Universidad Pública de Nueva York y continúa con el legado de su padre, el suizo Agass Baumgartner.

This painting had quite a rough go of it! Dirty and uncared for, it then fell off-the-wall and received some significant traumatic damage including the complete separation of a large section of canvas. While at the studio it was cleaning and received an interleaved lining. And while I wasn’t satisfied with the initial conservation attempt, the second go-round proved much better and now I’m completely satisfied with the work and will be returning the painting back to my client. Agass Baumgartner fundó en 1978 el taller Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration en la ciudad de Chicago y su hijo Julian, es parte de él desde el 2000.

This lovely little Frederick Remington painting on board arrived and it looked off to me. I’ve worked on dozens of Remington paintings and that familiarity with his work instantly threw up red flags. The color of the sky was off; Remington often painted in black and white leaving almost all color absent but here the sky was a yellow/tan color. In addition it seemed oddly flat and without depth found elsewhere in the painting. Sure enough the entire sky was overpainted to cover up what appears to be skinning (over cleaning). El heredero del taller ha colaborado con obras valuadas en millones de dólares y de artistas de talla mundial como Jackson Pollock, Josef Albers o William Merrirr Chase.

El éxito de sus videos radica en la difusión cultural y lo relajante que puede ser ver al artista restaurando obras de arte con siglos de antigüedad.

La crítica recurrente que tiene el restaurador es que su praxis es genérica y que cada obra necesita un tratamiento único, pues la técnica, materiales, temas y fechado son variados; sin embargo, y a pesar de esto, los videos de Baumgartner tienen millones de visualizaciones y cientos de miles de seguidores.
